Amanda and Wendell were engaged in August and married in October. They had the most beautiful, intimate fall wedding at the charming Brew and Bloom, an extremely popular floral cafe in the heart of Edmonton. It was an honour and a privilege to capture their precious memories, witness their love and work alongside amazing vendors.
Knowing it was a small venue, we packed light and operated with minimal gear to capture the day as organically and discreetly as possible. There is always a nervous excitement as we begin our day, not knowing what technical challenges we will have to content with, what lighting we will face and what inspiration will take hold. Above all, we care about preserving moments. But the thrill of the job for us is finding the most beautiful composition possible, shaping the light to flatter and compliment, creating cinematic shots that draw you right into the moment so you can relive your wedding for years to come. It's not an easy task, but for us it is extremely rewarding.
On October 22nd, our day started at the JW Marriott hotel in downtown Edmonton. The couple smartly booked adjoining rooms, which we honestly can't recommend enough for wedding day prep. It eliminates travel time and provides us fast and easy access. Minutes matter on Wedding Day. This was our first time meeting the couple in person and they were absolutely the sweetest people imaginable. We were also charmed by their pet dog, whose excitement was equally as palpable as theirs!
Amanda was in her dress within twenty minutes of our arrival and the overcast skies created beautiful soft light to capture her in this moment. We turned off the yellow tinged lights in the room and placed her in front of the window. This small pocket of time is one of my favourites to witness and capture. Brides literally glow and she was sitting there in her dress, glowing with joy, love, excitement. It was magical.
Before we knew it, our time had come to drive to Brew and Bloom to prepare for the ceremony. We were a bit nervous about how small the venue would be, but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The decor was beautiful. There was live music, a cellist and harpist, which created a warm and elegant atmosphere. I always find classical music evocative of 'olden times' and enjoy the mindset it puts me into, it channels fresh creativity. Their exchange of personal vows was deeply moving and heartwarming.
After their ceremony ended and alongside their wondrous photographer Nicole Ashley, we took them to the University Arts Building for their formals. The red vines were more spectacular than we have ever seen them. I can't think of a better location in the whole city to capture these striking fall colours, the grandeur of the brick building added an extra element of drama and impressiveness.
We headed back to Brew and Bloom for their reception, the room had been flipped and new decor laid out. They booked a fun Photo Booth from Our Lavish Guests and late night ice cream from Kind Ice Cream, which had the best vegan ice cream I've ever tasted.
Congratulations Amanda and Wendell!
